While on a stop in the Quad Cities, Richard struck up a conversation with an RT&T driver, which led him to contact RT&T for information on the lease-to-own program. He had leased before, and at this point, knew he was ready to own a truck and start his own business. Richard joined RT&T in early 2020 and brought with him over 30 years of experience in the trucking industry.
In comparing what RT&T does differently than other lease programs he had come across, Richard mentioned the affordable payments, no balloon payment at the end of the lease, and that he appreciated the honest information he received. Knowing the cost of running a business and the expense involved in truck upkeep and repairs, he was glad to have the Maintenance Escrow account. He had a couple larger repairs over the years and having money set aside was a big help. In working with RT&T Repair, he said Andy is a great guy, knows what he is doing, and has a competent team.
Richard was able to pay off the truck with consistent running and little home time, stating that you have to run to make money. While there may have been an occasional load or planning difference of opinion, nothing was a deal breaker. His advice to drivers wanting to lease is to "make the commitment - you have to be in it for the long haul. You have to keep the money coming in, which may cut into time with family. It's not forever, but it has to be the focus." He also suggests living on a tight budget - if you have an extra good week, be sure that money stays in the bank, so you are always saving for a rainy day.
As for what the future holds, Richard plans to run under his own authority, cutting back his hours a bit, and sticking closer to home to spend overdue time with family.
RT&T would like to wish Richard all the best in his future endeavors as an Owner Operator!
